Tax Planning Checklist

  • Review your last tax return.

  • What is your marginal tax rate?

  • Do you have carry-forward losses?

  • What was the ratio of short-term to long-term capital gains realized?

  • Analyze your tax return to identify strategies that might minimize your tax bill.

  • Look for tax loss harvesting opportunities in your portfolio.

  • Evaluate asset location to determine if all your holdings are in the appropriate accounts.

  • Make sure to take the required minimum distribution before year-end.

  • Consider a Roth conversion to potentially reduce future tax liabilities.

  • Explore tax-efficient vehicles such as donor-advised funds, charitable trusts, and qualified charitable distributions.

  • Create a retirement distribution plan to optimize the taxes you pay on your annual distributions.

  • Revisit the option of making a qualified charitable distribution from your IRA if you don’t need all your required minimum distribution and are concerned about taxes.

  • Consider a 529 rollover to a Roth IRA if you do not need the funds for educational purposes.
